The History MA degree consists of a minimum of 36 graduate hours.
Students who plan to continue with their post-graduate studies at
the doctoral level are strongly encouraged to write a thesis.
Required of all students - 18 hours
- HIST 5310 Historiography
- HIST 5360 Applied History
- One graduate course in U.S. history
- One graduate course in European or Latin American history
- Two approved non-history graduate electives
Thesis route - 18 additional hours
- 9 additional hours in a designated field (U.S., European, or Latin American)
- 3 hours designated History electives
- 6 hours master's thesis
- Successfully defend thesis in oral examination
- 2 years of college-level work in a foreign language
Non-thesis route - 18 additional hours
- 9 additional hours in a designated field
- 9 hours designated History electives
- Pass comprehensive written examination
With prior approval of the student's graduate committee, up to 6
hours of 4000-level courses taken for graduate credit will be
accepted. Students may transfer up to 12 hours of graduate credit
from regionally-accredited institutions.
