Dr. Vanessa Vázquez Sánchez

Dr. Vanessa Vázquez Sánchez visits us from the University of Havana in Cuba. Her research is focused on the fields of Human Ontogeny, Biodemography and Nutritional Anthropology; health and disease, growth and development. She is an Assistant Researcher and Assistant Professor of Biological Anthropology at the Montané Museum of the University of Havana. Dr. Vázquez Sánchez earned her MA in Anthrophology from the University of Havana and her Ph.D in Biological Science in 2010 also from the University of Havana. She is a member of the Cuban Society of Biological Anthropology, of the Honorific Chair of Anthropology Luis Montané, of the Chair of Women and of the Chair of Social Sciences of health and human well-being of the University of Havana. She is the head of the research projects: Prevention and care of eating disorders with emphasis on obesity, and rural and fishery anthropology: lifestyles and adaptation to environmental change of agricultural populations and fishermen living in Yaguajay, Sancti Spíritus. She carries out university extension work for health promotion in primary and secondary schools in Havana and in favor of the local development of the rural community of La Picadora, Yaguajay, Sancti Spíritus. She has been a member of the Organizing Committee of the International Women Scientist Workshops in the 21st Century, and of the International Anthropology Conventions. She received the 2016 University of Havana Award for research: "Contributions from the Montané Anthropological Museum to local development and the socialization of knowledge in the rural community of La Picadora, Yaguajay, Sancti Spíritus.” Dr. Vázquez Sánchez has collaborated with the University of Alabama and the Harte Research Institute here at Texas A&M University—Corpus Christi.
