Imagillaboration National Sculpture Project:
an ongoing, groundbreaking endeavor comprised of over one hundred sculptors nationwide.

Imagillaboration

From 2007-2009, 106 sculptors representing twenty-six states across the country have joined together to undertake a collaborative art project of unprecedented proportions. Working in regional groups of five to nine people, the artists have created an immense body of collaborative three-dimensional artwork of which will be on display at the Islander Gallery.  A reception for the exhibition will occur on Saturday, March 6, 2010 from 5:00 – 7:00 pm.

Each participant was to create a “seed” element, the beginning segment of a sculpture which was then passed onto other group members who each added their own artistic element to every piece. Once the cycle of exchange was complete, each artist will have contributed to every sculpture, and there is one finished sculpture for each person participating.
Entitled “Imagillaboration” (i-ma-ji-la-bôr-ã-sh?n), a combination of “Imagination” and “Collaboration”, the project is designed to bolster a sense of community among professional contemporary sculptors. “I wanted to create an opportunity for intense visual dialog between highly creative people, a dialog that provokes new perspectives, and challenges preconceptions about our work.” says Project Coordinator, Michael Cottrell.

The Imagillaboration project has an impressive lineup of participants from around the county, including twenty-six sculpture professors from colleges and universities, and a host of professional artists who have dedicated their lives to sculptural work. “I don’t know of any precedent for a three-dimensional collaborative project of this magnitude” says Cottrell. “The logistics were difficult, but our participants are true pros, and they have created some extremely innovative work together.”  Now that this massive body of artwork is complete the show has traveled to several venues in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and New Mexico, and will continue on a lengthy tour of venues across the country.
