Arequipa is located in Southern Perú, situated 2335 meters above sea level and is a gateway to some of the most spectacular landscapes in the Andes. It is known as the “white city” due to its beautiful colonial buildings built of sillar, a white volcanic stone, Arequipa’s recent history in the visual arts has been distinguished mostly by watercolor conservative landscape painting. The eleven young artists represented in this exhibition represent a new vision in art that is fully aware of the present as it explores self-identity and a social consciousness linked to the complex cultural and historical situation in Perú. This exhibition was curated by Jim Edwards, Gallery Director and Associate Professor of Art at Houston Baptist University.
